What is the meaning of “publishing” nowadays? This is the basic question that underlies a number of projects which question new publishing modes at a time full of innovations and technological changes. As platforms, channels, production and distribution methods constantly evolve, a wide range of possible answers to the question opens up. While experimentations have often focused on the manipulation of form and content, less attention has been put on the exploration of alternative modes of publishing meant in its wider sense — that is to analyse, in all their individual phases, processes and modes for something to become available and accessible to an extended audience. This collection examines some case studies that exemplify the different ways in which the traditional publishing process can be developed and subverted, and the multiple meanings that the term “publishing” can take.
